What's the bacteria in Pismo's water?

Good morning. It’s Friday, and I’m reading about the best way to reheat pizza according LA’s finest pizzerias. Onto the five Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Over 50,000 people have been ordered to boil their water in the Five Cities area after officials found coliform bacteria in the water supply. So, what is coliform bacteria? Coliform itself is common and not a harmful strain, but its presence in any amount can be a strong indicator that a different harmful bacteria, such as E. Coli, is present. And officials said the levels of coliform were “unprecedented” for this area, demanding further testing before the water is deemed safe.

California’s high-speed rail is at risk if federal money stops coming through. The project, which seeks to connect San Francisco to LA by train, is already $14 billion in, years behind schedule and shaping up to be $100 billion over budget. Only 18% of that funding is from federal dollars, with the other 82% coming from the state, but the cuts would decimate the already-grim financial viability. Trump’s transportation secretary called it a “crappy project” and one member of the rail’s board said “We are obviously in trouble.”

3.

Lake Shasta, California’s largest reservoir, reached its capacity this week for the third time in three years. The last time this happened three years in a row was from 2010 to 2012. This winter was filled with adequate rain and snow that pushed it to the top, a relief for the drought-traumatized state. The reservoir primarily serves Central Valley agriculture and cities, but it trickles down to the Bay Area, too.

4.

President Trump signed an executive order instructing an agency to axe funding for NPR and PBS, two publicly funded broadcasters. Trump went as far as requesting the agency “root out” other non-federal sources of funding to cut, vowing to deconstruct them as makers of “radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news.’” Collectively, NPR and PBS receive about a half billion from the feds. PBS’s CEO said this would disrupt an “essential service.” “There’s nothing more American than PBS,” she said.

Cal Poly Beach Volleyball has an unofficial mascot. Herc, the golden retriever, is a beloved service dog who follows the team around on their practices and meets. His owner first got Herc when she was struggling with her mental health, and the fluffy canine has turned her life around, sitting on her lap whenever she needs to take a minute. But Herc has taken to spreading the love to the team. “He's a good boy in that he helps everyone there,” the coach said.
