Two students fell out of dorm windows

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, and I’m watching rare footage of sucker fish hitching a ride on a humpback whale in Australia. Onto the five Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Two students recently fell out of dorm windows, Cal Poly confirmed. Following the incidents, University Housing reminded students to keep window screens secured and urged students not to tamper with the safety features, conducting sweeps to encourage compliance. The university gave no further information regarding the incidents, denying to give details on when the incidents occurred, which dorms they were in or what the condition of the students is.

2.

Cal Poly will adopt a new general education pattern next fall that is consistent with all the other Cal States, Universities of California and state community colleges. Previously, transfer students had to take extra GEs under Cal Poly’s more stringent requirements. Cal Poly is the last Cal State to make the switch because it was granted a one-year extension so it would coincide with the semester conversion.

A prominent Los Angeles Islamic group sent a letter demanding SLO County District Attorney Dan Dow apologize for linking New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani to 9/11. The group called into question whether Dow would prosecute Muslim defendants fairly in the county. The group’s executive director said Dow’s repost “weaponizes bigotry and baselessly ties an elected Muslim official to terrorism is appalling and reflects the deeply rooted dehumanization and fearmongering in this country.”

The seven states that rely on the Colorado River for water must agree on how much each state has to scale back on their water usage by today. Negotiations began two years ago, leading to much contention as the western U.S. continues to overdraw from the river. The upstream states, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah are on one side while New Mexico, California, Arizona, and Nevada are hoping to maintain large rights for those downstream. California currently pulls more than any other state.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has a new nickname for President Donald Trump. In a post showing multiple photos of Trump snoozing at various events captioned “The Nodfather.” It caught on with over 38,000 likes and 7,000 reposts. It’s a ‘nod,’ if you will, to Trump’s own nickname for Joe Biden, “Sleepy Joe,” both employed to insult the other person’s age and energy level. In a different event Newsom deemed Trump an “invasive species” as well.
