Partying fines doubled for this weekend and next
Good morning. It’s Friday, and I’m reading about the 13th annual Witches and Warlocks Paddle coming up in Morro Bay this Sunday. Onto the five Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
At midnight last night SLO’s safety enhancement zone regulations for Halloween went into effect, meaning doubled fines for alcohol- and party-related infractions. Fines will now range from $700 to $1,000. This is the second year that SLO made the enhancement zone last two weeks, rather than just during Halloween weekend. The current enhancement zone will last until 7 a.m. on Monday before another goes into effect on Thursday.

CalFresh benefits may be delayed now that the federal government shutdown lasted past yesterday. SLO County officials had warned that yesterday was the cutoff for when the delay would affect recipients of Electronic Benefit Transfer cards. Over 28,000 SLO County residents rely on EBT for grocery money. “We understand how concerning this uncertainty is for families across the county,” a press release read.

SLO wants to hear from renters, a group that makes up 62% of the city and includes the majority of Cal Poly students. The city will hold a study session to both hear about rental problems in the city and inform renters about their rights as tenants. Some renters interviewed indicated they felt the city wasn’t affordable, a focus of the event. “Every year that I find a new place, it could be smaller or bigger, but no matter what it's more expensive,” one renter said.

Kennedy Library’s new mural came with its two-year renovation, and its official unveiling was yesterday. “Grounds for Growth” depicts person’s face up close with flowers surrounding their head and branching out from their face. The mural’s co-artist said the flowers depict students from different backgrounds coming together and it shows this central person smell the various flowers to symbolize how students and ideas can rub off on each other.

Airports are well-known for how easy to manage they are and how frictionless every traveller’s experience is. Obviously. So naturally LAX, one of the most major airports in the world, is shutting down one of its terminals fully by Tuesday, not to be reopened until right before the Summer Olympics are hosting in Los Angeles in 2028. It expects to grow its footprint even more after the $30 billion renovation is complete.
