Former Cal poly junior pleads not guilty to hit and run felonies
Good morning. It’s Thursday, and I’m reading about how many times Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART, has been delayed in the last two years. Onto the five Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
Former Cal Poly junior Ishan Pandhare pleaded not guilty to three hit and run felonies at his arraignment yesterday. He was also taken back into custody after the judge determined the initial $20,000 bail he posted was insufficient; that number was set for reckless driving and not the current, serious felony charges he faces. His new bail is $150,000 and, if released, he will not be allowed to drive, consume alcohol or step foot on Cal Poly’s campus for the duration of the case.

SLO City Council wrote a letter urging public safety measures, financial compensation for local communities and further land conservation if the state is to extend Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant’s operations. The letter did not outright endorse an extension, and the council previously declined to sign the county’s letter advocating for a 20-year extension. Notably, the council did not explicitly mention an expired tax on the plant that funded SLO schools.

After listening to a presentation on Laguna Lake Municipal Golf Course’s future, SLO City Council determined that it will be a long time before the course is anything but a golf course. In fact, the city is planning to invest in new infrastructure for the course that will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The city considered the merits of using the land for affordable housing, but it was largely dismissed at the meeting, with one council member saying he doesn’t “see a realistic path forward.”

During an annual undercover human trafficking operation, authorities across the state arrested 600 people during January, human trafficking awareness month. Seventy-three of those arrests were in Stanislaus County, near Modesto, making up 10% of the total arrests. The Stanislaus sheriff also said they recovered four victims during “Operation Reclaim and Rebuild” and that Stanislaus’ high numbers are due to their more aggressive arrests, not a higher prevalence.

A year of menu planning. Twelve hours of prep. One man running six kitchens. This is: the culinary trials of cooking for the Super Bowl. And some celebrities might just opt for the hot dog stand anyway. The menu varies from $8 water bottle (tickets are baseline $4,300) to the $180 braised beef shank that’s called Thor’s Hammer. Even through the methodically planned logistical nightmare, Levi’s Stadium is uniquely equipped with kitchens and kitchenware of the future. “It’s Space X-level stuff,” the head chef said.
