Cal Poly to expand 2+2 degree program

Good morning. It’s Friday, and I’m reading about San Luis Obispo’s downtown holiday parade taking place tonight at 7 p.m. Onto the five Cal Poly, SLO and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Cal Poly students have differing opinions of the 2+2 degree options the university is offering at regional community colleges. The program is expanding next year by adding two degrees, business administration and liberal studies, to the already existing sociology cohorts. One current student said she wished she had the opportunity to save money through doing this program instead, another said the accessibility is a good thing for local students and a third worried if it “diminishes” the value of a Cal Poly degree.

Seven students and staff members at Arroyo Grande High School showed signs of carbon monoxide poisoning after a gas leak cause a partial evacuation of the school. Two of those affected went to the hospital “in an abundance of caution” but the overall symptoms were not severe, district officials said. Officials cleared the area and fixed the gas leak, allowing instruction to continue after.

3.

After being arrested on suspicion of driving drunk to school last month, the Paso Robles High School Principal has now resigned. Police reports shows she had a 0.25% blood alcohol content level, over three times the legal limit of 0.08. According to the report, staff reported that the former principal had showed up to work intoxicated for several days before her arrest. When interviewed, she said she hoped to move on and: “I’m sad that this happened.”

4.

Californians with disabilities are struggling to get by after the Trump administration’s nearly $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, the country’s public health insurance, and decimation of the Office of Civil Rights, which enforces disability law. At least 1 million Californians with disabilities receive services through the Medicaid system for wheelchairs, in-home aides and speech, occupational and physical therapy, alongside other medical care. “Every family I know is terrified right now,” one mother of a person with a disability said.

An infamous television segment — which has been on hiatus for over a decade — is coming back to the Bay Area’s KRON-TV channel. “People Behaving Badly” is returning on Dec. 11 with its original host to call out Bay Area residents that break legal and social rules. If you’re going home to the Bay over break, don’t ride solo in the carpool lane, drag your dog into a coffee shop, dump trash on the road, run a red light or do anything that warrants getting a clip of you sent to [email protected].
