20% of mail-in ballots are already counted

Good morning. It’s Monday, and I’m reading about “the sluttiest mile on the West Coast” in San Francisco. Onto the five Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Some 20% of mail-in ballots for SLO County have been returned, with more still to be processed. Democrats made up 47% of the returned ballots, Republicans made up 33%, those with no party preference made up 14% and others made up 5-6%. U.S. Postal Service advised that people should send in their ballots at least a week ahead of time in case it takes longer for the mail to reach a processing facility that will stamp the postmark.

2.

A SLO man was arrested under suspicion for threatening to bomb local synagogues. His charge was escalated to a hate crime. Police apprehended him after he posted on X that he planned to “blow up” every synagogue within a 20-mile radius. In the post he wrote “This is a real threat, call the police and report me for terrorism.”

3.

California euthanized four gray wolves after ranchers repeatedly complained that they were killing off their livestock at an “unprecedented level” in the northern parts of the state. After gray wolves went nearly extinct, the population surged to the increasingly stable numbers seen today. But the larger amount of wolves has also raised more conflicts between the species and humans nearby, causing 70 livestock losses from March until September this year.

4.

A Tahoe retreat was just named the best resort in Northern California and one of the top 50 resorts in the world. The Ritz-Carlton in Truckee just earned these accolades. The Condé Nast Traveler said the location was one of the primary contributing factors, surrounded by nature and with breathtaking mountain views. This hotel was up there with those from Indonesia, Brazil, Curaçao and Mexico, earning California global recognition.

5.

One Bay Area bachelorette turned to new methods to find her future husband: taking out 12 billboards along Highway 101 with a URL to marrylisa.com which evidently cost “a shocking amount.” She received enough date propositions to fill multiple binders alongside a thick stack of hate mail that she printed out to fully appreciate its volume. She was doxxed, called a “crazy bitch” by a Fox News reporter. She received 3,800 applications and 8,200 messages total.
